Some of the #ieifamily visited Helsinki, Finland to explore the Scandinavian Education System with Sari Hurme-Mehtälä and Kide Science by Accelerate Learning. Superintendents Dr. Kyle Barrentine, Dr. Alena Zachery Ross, Robert Jansen, Dan Cox, Dr. Xanthy Karamanos, and John Welch participated in the exploration, accompanied by IEI’s Mariann Cabrera for this educational journey.
Our journey began with a visit to By the Sea Daycare, where we observed a lively Kide Science lesson in action. Watching preschoolers tackle challenges with critical thinking and creativity was truly a joy! After a scenic stroll through the heart of Helsinki, we arrived at the Kide Science HQ where co-founder Dr. Jenni Vartiainen enlightened us on the transformative power of play in early education. We even got hands-on experience, blending fun with learning through Kide Science’s unique approach. The day wrapped up perfectly with a networking dinner cruise along the stunning shores of Helsinki—what a view!
Our second day kicked off at the Finnish National Agency for Education, where we engaged in a discussion comparing the Finnish and U.S. education systems with the wonderful team of Sannamaaria Vanamo, Maria Palmu, Ida Immonen, Janniina Vlasov, and Outi Hakanen. We then visited Vallila Primary School, Helsinki’s oldest elementary school. After enjoying lunch with the students and principal Jouni Kpoenen in the school cafeteria, we toured the campus and observed some lessons during the school day.
On our final day, we made our way to the U.S. Embassy, where we met the ambassador's team and learned about their efforts to enhance education in both the USA and Finland. We then ventured to Reaktor where we heard from several remarkable speakers:
Each session sparked new ideas and connections, leaving us inspired and eager to implement what we learned.
This trip was not just about education; it celebrated creativity, collaboration, and the joy of learning! We’re bringing back a wealth of insights and ideas to enhance educational experiences back home. Thank you to Sari Hurme-Mehtälä and the entire Kide Science team (Unni Pulliaine, Jenni Vartiainen, Aino Kuronen, Satu Appuka, Emilia Touvila, Odetta Lee-Simmons, and Gabi Ortega-Muir) for being such incredible hosts.
