Welcome to our weekly review of the latest superintendent news across the IEI Family! As the new school year kicks off, we have some inspiring updates from DeKalb County, Ann Arundel County, New Orleans, and Kansas City. Let’s explore the latest from our K12 Educational Leadership!
Dr. Devon Horton, Superintendent of DeKalb County in GA, has set an ambitious tone for the new academic year. He encouraged his school community to get “ready and be locked in” for what promises to be an unforgettable educational journey. Dr. Horton’s enthusiastic call to action highlights the district’s commitment to providing an exceptional educational experience for all students. With such a dynamic start, we can’t wait to see the innovative initiatives and achievements for DeKalb County Schools.
Despite facing reductions in state funding, Dr. Mark Bedell, Superintendent of Ann Arundel County Public Schools, has successfully secured funding to maintain vital College and Career Readiness (CCR) programs for the 2024-2025 school year. Dr. Bedell emphasized the critical importance of these programs, stating, “These programs are critical if we are to help every student belong, grow, and succeed.” His dedication to maintaining these opportunities ensures that students will continue receiving the support they need to thrive academically and professionally.
In New Orleans, public education leaders celebrated the opening of The Leah Chase School with a vibrant second line and ribbon-cutting ceremony this past weekend. Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams of NOLA Public Schools passionately called for “All hands on deck,” and the school community delivered, ensuring the new school was ready for the academic year. The joyous celebration and community spirit set a positive tone for the school’s future, honoring the legacy of Leah Chase while fostering a nurturing environment for students.
Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) demonstrated their commitment to supporting families by offering free backpacks with school supplies, immunizations, and fresh produce during a drive-thru event. Superintendent Dr. Jennifer Collier acknowledged the growing need for these resources and expressed gratitude for the community’s support. This initiative aimed to alleviate the stress of back-to-school preparations and ensure that every family had the essential educational resources needed for a successful start to the school year. Dr. Collier’s statement, “Every penny counts,” highlights the district’s dedication to positively impacting the community.
